A visit to the Hortillonnages by traditional boat is a must when exploring Amiens. Discover the flora and fauna of this unique site with the people who look after it every day.
Cultivated since the Middle Ages by the hortillons, these gardens "on the water", accessed exclusively by boat, are hemmed in by the arms of the Somme and Avre rivers and extend over 300 ha, in the communes of Rivery, Camon, Longueau and Amiens. The plots of land are criss-crossed by canals, or "rieux", navigable by flat-bottomed boats known as "barque à cornets". These are characterized by their sloping bow to facilitate docking without damaging the banks. They were once used to transport vegetables. Visits are organized in the afternoons from April to October, to discover the flora and fauna depending on the season. A video presentation of the site is available at the reception desk. Association and pier address: 54, Boulevard de Beauvillé, 700 m from the station, opposite Parc Saint-Pierre in the boulevard's side alley Duration: 45 min 12 people + 1 guide per boat Reservations must be made by 6 p.m. the day before at: https://www.leshortillonnages-amiens.com
